Legends in Motion 5/5/26 Day Adventure
Arts Programming 8:45am-5pm for kids aged 6-11 years old
What are we exploring?
Today we bring ancient stories to life through movement, masks, and mythic theater! Drawing from global folklore and mythology, we’ll explore what makes a legend timeless—heroic journeys, magical beings, tricksters, protectors, and wise spirits. Think: theatrical scenes, expressive movement, and wearable art inspired by the stories that shaped the world. "Scene from a Legend" Theater Workshop: Small groups choose a myth or folktale (e.g. Anansi the Spider, Amaterasu the Sun Goddess, Maui the Trickster, Sedna of the Sea, or the Phoenix) and create a short theater scene. Emphasis on character, transformation, and dramatic moments. We will play with one kiddo narrating while others act or move. "Mythic Crown Making": design and decorate crowns inspired by characters from global myths—gods, creatures, animals, heroes, or spirits. Materials: cardboard, feathers, metallics, natural elements, paint. What magic or wisdom does your crown hold? "Movement of the Mythic": Explore the energy and emotion behind mythical beings through guided movement. Examples: Move like a dragon rising from the earth Dance like a storm god summoning lightning Flow like a river spirit watching time pass Blend individual movement with group ritual-style formations. "Legend Builders" Story Circle: Campers co-create an original myth inspired by symbols, animals, or elements from different world cultures. Combine storytelling, drawing, and light improvisation to build a new legend from the ground up. Arts Assembly provides a creative and active space for kids to explore the arts on days that A2 public schools are out. Kids spend the day playfully exploring movement, theater, music and the visual arts. We love collaborative exploration, problem solving, and innovative solutions inspired by creativity. Led by U-M Professors in the Performing Arts, local teachers and artists, Arts Assembly is your downtown arts resource for the whole family.
