Echoes of the Ancients 6/11/26 Adventure
Arts Programming 8:45am-5pm for kids aged 6-11 years old
What are we exploring?
During this Day Adventure, we journey through time to explore the artistic legacies of ancient civilizations—from the storytelling of Greco-Roman theater to the sacred symbolism of Egyptian art. Think: myth-inspired performances, symbolic sculpture, and dance as a living archive of human expression. Through these echoes, we’ll create something new from something timeless. "Theater of the Gods": Kids create short dramatic scenes inspired by Greco-Roman myths, legends, or archetypes (heroes, oracles, gods, tricksters). How did the ancients use theater to tell truths, ask questions, or make sense of the world? "Symbols of the Nile" Visual Art: Inspired by ancient Egyptian reliefs and hieroglyphics, campers design their own symbolic wall panels or scrolls, incorporating personal symbols, decorative borders, and figures in profile. Foil, paper, clay. If your life were carved in stone, what story would it tell? "Story in Motion" Dance Workshop: Campers explore how ancient cultures (Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, etc.) Use movement in ritual, celebration, and storytelling. Create short group dances that represent natural cycles (sunrise, harvest, storm, renewal) or mythic journeys. Gesture-based storytelling, group unison, and dramatic shifts. "Legacy Builders" Sculpture & Architecture: Build mini monuments or temples inspired by ancient structures (Parthenon, ziggurats, pyramids, amphitheaters). Recycled materials, cardboard, clay, or paper columns. Add carvings or murals that tell a modern myth or value (e.g., bravery, wisdom, curiosity). Arts Assembly provides a creative and active space for kids to explore the arts on days that A2 public schools are out. Kids spend the day playfully exploring movement, theater, music and the visual arts. We love collaborative exploration, problem solving, and innovative solutions inspired by creativity. Led by U-M Professors in the Performing Arts, local teachers and artists, Arts Assembly is your downtown arts resource for the whole family.
